A Bunch of Babies
Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 3:1, “And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.”
Thought to Glow: The next time someone has to correct you, listen to them and let them help you grow up.
Passage: 1 Corinthians 3
Wait a minute, did you just read that? Paul just called a bunch of people babies! “How rude!” “How dare he speak to those believers like that! I’m going to give him a piece of my mind!” Or, wait a minute. Before we get angry and allow our flesh to win a battle, let’s stop and think.
God knew just what was needed to get their attention. At times, God has to speak through stern words to cause us to wake up and think. Don’t get me wrong, we don’t get to say everything on our minds. God has instructed us to “let no corrupt communication proceed out of our mouths” (Eph. 4:29). We are to “be kind one to another” (Eph. 4:32). “A fool utters all his mind,” (Prov. 29:11). Yet, there are times when firm and pointed words are needed to get someone’s attention. God has told us to speak “the truth in love” (Eph. 4:15).
The Corinthians were weak in the faith and were not growing as Christians. They should have been mature Christians. God has told us to “grow in faith and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.” (2 Pet. 3:18). Yet, so often we fail at growing. Then, God in His mercy sends someone to correct us and in love help us.
The next time someone corrects you, though it may seem harsh at first, stop and think. More than likely, God has brought them along to help you grow up!
